Greetings from San Diego! I hope and trust all is well with you and that you are enjoying this beautiful season. Spring time is a time of renewal and rejuvenation. It is a great time to re-commit to your fitness and conditioning program and prioritizing your health. It is also a great time to get in a good-ole fashioned spring cleaning. That always feels great!
My new 1 mos. old McKenna Christine Durkin was born on March 10. She has been a true blessing to the family and has brought us a tremendous amount of joy. She really has mesmerized me with her beauty and calmness. Babies really make you appreciate life and I have felt tremendous gratitude as I watch in awe of her daily growth and change.
My hope and intention is that as we strive for success, happiness, and balance in our own lives, we keep the humility, compassion and the love of that of a child. Keep striving, keep working, and keep loving. Enjoy the TD Times this month and look I forward to connecting real soon. Thanks for your support.
Todd

TD'S NUTRITIONAL QUICK TIPS

Smart Shopping
- Visit local farmers markets in your area for fresh and organic food!
- Once a week pick a fruit, veggie, or healthy snack at the grocery store that you have never tried. This adds variety to your diet and makes eating healthy fun!
- A quick fast rule about food labels: the less ingredients the better! If you don't know how to pronounce an ingredient, it's an immediate red flag!
- Plan a menu for the week and buy only what is on your grocery list

Eating Habits
Dining Out

- When dining with a friend/significant other, order salads and split an entree.
- Ask for dressings and sauces on the side - this can save 500 calories per meal!!
-Ask your server to bring you half of a meal and package the second portion in a "to go" bag.

Water
-Dehydration is the #1 reason for fatigue! Drink half your body weight in fluid ounces and add 8oz for every 15 minutes of exercise.
-Drink water between meals instead of during; too much water prevents gastric (stomach) emptying and thus, digestion.
-Start every morning by drinking 16oz of water. This flushes out toxins and ensures that the body starts the day right by being well hydrated!

- Stop eating just before you are full; you can always eat more later if your stomach is still growling.
- Curious how many calories you should be eating? - Sign up and get your Metabolic Test today!
- Eat large meals earlier in the day (especially breakfast!)
- Avoid eating 2-3 hours before bed; its okay to go to bed hungry! Your sleep time is your body's chance to repair. Eating before bedtime forces your body to work digesting instead of repairing.
- Take your daily multivitamin!
- Eat 4-5 meals a day, every 3-4 hours
- Prep food and freeze preplanned meals: place nutritional snacks wherever you spend the most time in your day (in your car, briefcase, desk drawer), then when you are hungry your snack is right there. Plan one day a week to restock.

Make a life long commitment to health! Make one healthy change a week and by the end of the year you are 52 steps closer to a healthy lifestyle!

GUEST ARTICLE: "THE KLIKA CLEANSE"
By Brett Klika, CSCS, Fitness Quest 10 Director of Athletics
I figure I might as well. After all, marketing is everything, right? Take common sense information, package it colorfully, and you have a product. The problem is, packaging reasonable, effective, simple nutrition information isn't sexy and exciting. You don't get headlines in Hollywood with your new body saying "I eat reasonable, unprocessed nutrition in multiple small portions." It's a lot more interesting to see someone losing weight sucking lemon water infused with pepper and maple syrup through a straw in a "cleansing." You can also follow the (insert hot new name here for portion controlled caloric intake) diet. To be on the hot new infomercial, however, you usually need to take whatever laxative that is now being glorified as a "weight loss cleanse."

The answer to all your problems? No!

Let's pretend for a minute that I'm rich and famous, my "genetics fairy" was a little more "accommodating" and you actually wanted your body to look like mine. As US magazine captures me doing shirtless push ups on some park bench in Malibu, the caption under the photo would read "Hardbody Klika gets ripped by eating mostly whole unprocessed foods in frequent small amounts." Snore! No books were sold, no "celebrity trainers" endorsed, no hot new trends ignited. Shirtless Klika in Malibu is a marketing dud!

The truth is however, the only way to establish long term, healthy habits with today's abundance of "food" (I use the term lightly) is to adapt the strategy of eating food that hasn't been screwed with by man and machine, and doing it in small amounts. What type of food am I talking about? Look at the ingredients list. If there is more than one thing on the list, minimize consumption. Chemicals are added to food for a variety of reasons, none of which are to improve our health. I can't be certain, but I really don't think the original blueprint for mans' consumption of mother nature's edibles included "High Fructose Corn Syrup." Our hunting and gathering ancestors didn't sprinkle "Sodium Benzoate" on their meats, legumes, vegetables, and roots. Their societies didn't suffer from widespread obesity, heart disease, cancers, and diabetes either. They would die the way I want to go, in a one-on-one knife fight with a woolly mammoth.

ATHLETE CORNER: "Gymnastics, Martial Arts, Dance, and Soccer: The Furious Four for Pre-Adolescent Athletes"
By Brett Klika, CSCS, Fitness Quest 10 Director of Athletics
The inner workings of human movement, coordination, and development are a complex and fascinating spectacle. There are nearly an infinite amount of different stimuli and intensities of stimuli our brain and body must learn to react to physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are born with some of these reaction patterns already in place, but many we must learn through experience. Logically, the more experiences we have with different stimuli, the more successful and effective our reactions and will be. When we are trying to develop coordinated, effective and injury-free young athletes, this process of learning from a variety of stimuli is very important.
