I love being motivated and inspired. I watched the Belmont Stakes horse race this past weekend and was really pulling for Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner "Big Brown", to win the Triple Crown. Although he was unsuccessful in his quest to win the race, I do not think it diminishes his past accomplishments. The Champ simply did not have it that day and could not muster up the energy to pull out a victory. As a matter of fact, I respect what the jockey did by pulling him up early to protect him and canter in through the finish line. While people question if it was his foot injury, lack of "supplements" or something else, he just did not have it that day. He will live to race another day or at least be able to stud some colts to race another day.
Do you ever feel like you do not have the energy to win every race? Sometimes you prepare, prepare, and prepare, and you come out short on the battle. Remember that life is a series of battles and that you must stay persistent, work hard, and forge ahead despite adversity. Sometimes you have to pull up and protect yourself. It is more important to win the war than all the battles. In life, continue focusing on your battles, but do not get knocked down too long if you get beat. A champion gets up one more time than he/she gets knocked down.
As you read today's edition of the TD Times, the Feature Article focuses on the Top 6 Challenges that I consistently hear people talking about. I have provided solutions to these 6 common obstacles so that you can forge ahead and continue your journey on creating success and happiness.
Happy Father's Day this weekend to all you fathers out there. Enjoy your special day! I hope to see you all soon.
Create a great week!

FEATURE ARTICLE: TOP 6 CHALLENGES YOU FACE TODAY & THE SOLUTIONS TO OVERCOME
By Todd Durkin
"Popularity is people liking you. Happiness is you liking you." In a world in which we are all trying to discover our full potential and create "happy" lives, I find this to be an interesting quote. In a world that is often over-stressed, out-of-balance, and out-of-shape, it is not because there is a lack of want for success that prevents so many people from discovering their full potential or attaining the happiness they so aspire. Most people want success, desire the best for themselves, and want to achieve balance in their lives but they often feel trapped in their situation and do not know how to overcome it.
As a personal trainer, business owner, and coach who has the opportunity to work with world-class executives, athletes, and clients, I often hear the same challenges, obstacles, and issues facing all of us today. The purpose of this article is to share with you the 6 biggest challenges we face today and the solutions to overcome them so that you can find peace, health, harmony, and happiness in your life. Here we go:

FEATURED CLIENTS - SUZANNE SZOLLAR
Written by Sharon Hill, FQ10 trainer
On May 9, 2008, Suzanne Szollar received the "Eagle Spirit Award" from Sharp Rehabilitation at their annual banquet. This award recognized Suzanne for her personal efforts and results in her own rehabilitation as well as the time she spends helping others who are overcoming severe injury. While many of you will recognize Suzanne (she has been working out at FQ10 since 2000), you might not be aware of her tremendous accomplishments. Her story is both inspirational and humbling.

Suzanne Szollar received the "Eagle Spirit Award"
In 1997, Suzanne was the Chief of the Spinal Cord Injury Service at the VA Hospital when she was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. After undergoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, she had to relearn her most basic skills. Once she was able to function on her own she was determined to continue her favorite pastime - biking with her husband, George. Not only has Suzanne recovered physically, she continues to challenge herself in other ways. She recently completed a B.S. in anthropology and mentors others through the Challenged Women's Support Initiative at Sharp.
I've been privileged to work with Suzanne for over 5 years. I have been asked what makes Suzanne so special. She never cancels an appointment, works hard at continually improving her balance and strength and I can only remember one day that she seemed "down". I believe that Suzanne has shown such improvement because of her self-discipline and positive view of life. She is also open to new ideas and has recently incorporated daily yoga practice in her life. In addition, she began cardio training with Pat Jak on Friday mornings - on her own bike at FQ10. After several months of structured training she has increased her cardio performance. (Her Aerobic Base jumped 20% and her Anaerobic Threshold jumped 15%!)
Suzanne credits the entire staff at FQ10 for providing her the "emotional uplift" she needed to continue her pursuit of optimal fitness.
FEATURED CLIENTS - BONNIE & KRISHNA ARORA
Written by Janet Bertrand, FQ10 trainer
Krishna and Bonnie Arora have been making the trek from Tierrasanta to Fitness Quest 10 in Scripps Ranch since 2002. After hearing raving reviews about FQ10 from clients Kathy and Carter Pease, the Arora's signed up to train with Todd. They were immediately impressed with not only Todd's training style but also his overall approach to health and wellness. The energy Bonnie and Krishna observed at Fitness Quest 10 instigated a passion in both of them for making fitness a daily necessity.

When the Aroras first joined Fitness Quest 10 they were also planning their first pilgrimage across Spain, traveling on the Santiago de Compestela, also known as the Camino, which is a 500-mile stretch across Spain starting at the French border and reaching all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. This first trip on the Camino in 2002, although successful, was much more challenging then their most recent trip, from which they have just returned.
This latest trip was taken to celebrate the return of their son, Major Rajiv Arora who is a doctor in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Iraq for the last 8 months. Bonnie and Krishna spent the first half of their trip visiting Seville, seeing the sights and enjoying Spanish culture. They then proceeded to finish the last 100 miles of the Camino, and felt as if this time they could have walked the entire 500 miles with ease. Bonnie and Krishna attribute this trip's ease to training with a weighted vest, doing push-ups, squats and dragging 45-pound plates on a sled through the parking lot.
Their years spent training at Fitness Quest 10 since their first pilgrimage has also made big differences in other trips taken in the last six years. Bonnie and Krishna's travels have included trips to Peru, Rome and India. Krishna has just recently finished writing a book detailing the lineage of their family history. Where will they go next? They are planning to travel to South America and to continue visiting family in India.

Krishna and Bonnie are a powerful example - they show that health is much more than just weight loss and gaining strength. It is the connection of family, friends, and overall respect for yourself and your community. The Aroras are what Fitness Quest 10 is all about!
FEATURED CLIENTS - MATT RESSMEYER
Written by Cara Regas, FQ10 trainer
Little Matt Ressmeyer came to Fitness Quest 10 four years ago as a 5'9" freshman setter for the Scripps Ranch High School volleyball team. He is now a 6'5" graduating senior heading off to Miami University of Ohio in the fall. As for his volleyball career, he helped lead the Falcons to the CIF championships and was recently named 1st Team All Western League, 1st Team All Section Division II, and 1st Team All San Diego Section. Matt has been working hard training with Cara Regas and Ryan Rogers, and all the Fitness Quest 10 team wants to commend him for his hard work and wish him well at school. Great job, Matt!
FEATURED CLIENTS - JORDAN TOPP
Written by Ryan Burgess, FQ10 trainer
Jordan Topp is a 2006 Rancho Bernardo (San Diego) graduate who now plays Defensive End/Tackle for Mesa College. In 2007 he was titled Most Valuable Player of the Year, Defensive Lineman of the Year, and 2007 All-Conference Selection.
"Training with Fitness Quest 10 has shown me what it takes to be an athlete."
These past few months of training have really started a new lifestyle for Jordan. In his old training days Jordan believed that because he was training, he could still eat and do whatever he wanted and still get his body in optimal playing shape. However, he soon realized that this was definitly not the case. As summer got closer and football became his main focus, Jordan knew it was time to get serious. After talking with Coach Ryan Burgess, they were able to put together a workout and nutrition plan to help Jordan achieve his goals.
At the beginning of his "transformation" Jordan weighed in at 295 lbs, which was a huge eye-opener. He realized it would take nothing but hard work from there on out, and he attacked his goal with relentless determination. Jordan gave up all fast food (except for Subway), and when he dines out now he usually orders fish or something with low fat content. Coach Burgess wanted Jordan to establish and build a healthy relationship with food, so despite the overall changes to his diet he still has the occasional splurge about once a week. Running every day has become a priority in Jordan's schedule, which has helped him drop both the desired weight as well as get him into the best shape of his life. "I never broke a 4 second 40 Yard Dash in High School, but after just 3 months of training at Fitness Quest 10 I was running in the 4.8's. Every session there leaves me feeling like I played an entire football game." It has been over two months of hard work, and we are proud to report that Jordan is currently weighing a lean 263lbs.
Thanks to an excellent trainer/mentor and a lot of hard work Jordan is continuing to get better and better each day, and closer to his goal of getting a football scholarship. "If you want to dominate at your sport, than Fitness Quest 10 is your answer!"
ATHLETE CORNER: THE WEIGHT ROOM FOR WOMEN ATHLETES
By Brett Klika, FQ10 Director of Athletics
Getting stronger is an important part of a speed and athletic performance program for every athlete, male or female. Success in sports is a matter of skill execution and force production. If you produce the right amount of force, at the right time, in the right direction, with the proper movement skills, you are going to have a high rate of success at what you are trying to do. Odds are, if you can create and control more force during sports skills than your opponent, you are going to defeat them. This rule stands whether you are a man or a woman. If two humans kick a soccer ball, the one who can create the most force through the ball is going to kick it the farthest and hardest, regardless of the sex of the kicker. Physics is one of the most non-sexists sciences.
Research has demonstrated that proper resistance training can aid in increasing force production during game skills such as running, jumping, throwing, etc. This same research suggests that if you want to produce a lot of force in an athletic event, you need to produce it in the weight room as well. This means moving challenging weight correctly! Again, this stands for men and women.

GUEST ARTICLE: "30 DAYS"
By Ryan Burgess, FQ10 Director of Football Development
For many people, there is a perception that personal trainers and strength coaches are "bullet proof." We live in gyms from sun up to sun down Monday through Sunday, educating, motivating, inspiring, and working out ourselves. We are all in the best shape; we all have the perfect hair, perfect smile, and perfect body, right? WRONG!!! Often times we are in the same shoes as the clients we serve: we hit training plateaus, we get burned out, and believe it or not, we struggle too!
That is where the idea for this article originated. Dating back to high school, all the way through college, and up to now, working as a health professional, I have been very open about my own personal struggles with health and weight. This candor has rubbed some the wrong way, but if my experiences have taught me one thing, it is that by sharing the challenges that I have faced with others, it helps them know that they are not alone, and that anybody can make the positive lifestyle changes that they seek.
