FEATURED ARTICLE: "CARRY ON"
By Todd Durkin
I had the great fortune to attend Chapel service at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, last week. In addition to being a chapel that is rich in tradition and beautiful in design, the message by the chaplain was loud and clear. It was about how in life, as in the military, we often need to "Carry On" through challenge, obstacles, "wars," and adversity. We are all faced with these, but it is how we react to them that determines our ultimate success. The message was an interesting and a timely one; the reason I was even in Annapolis was because of a company that had done exactly that: "Carry On."
Under Armour launched their new training shoes (Speed, Power, Evade) May 3rd, and it went extremely well. After years of hard work with an unwavering vision, this was a huge day for Under Armour, furthering their competition with the "big boys." I had the opportunity, along with several of my Fitness Quest 10 teammates, to share in this celebration with Kevin Plank, CEO, and his wonderful team as this was a monumental day in the company's history. The passion, focus, and determination of their entire team embraces their culture of "Being the Best in the Performance Industry." Under Armour's culture is exemplary of what it takes to be successful in any area of life.

ATHLETE CORNER: "YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS FOR CHAMPIONS"
By Brett Klika
For anyone who watched this year's Kentucky Derby, the tragedy of the injury and resultant euthanization of "8 Belles" after a second place finish left us wondering "Could this have been prevented?" I watch the sports and news stations interviewing prominent veterianarians and horse experts talking about how often these horses are not mature and developed enough to handle the demands of the sport. The money involved, however, incentivizes trainers and owners alike to push their horses to win with little or no focus on safety or long-term health. This process often ends in injury, and in horse racing, that usually means death. I preface the following by saying I have never been on a horse, more less trained one to race. With the epidemic of injuries we are seeing in youth sports however, I can't help but observe some interesting parallels...

The Fitness Jeanie Detox Program
Have you felt sluggish, unmotivated, frustrated, bogged down, tired? Are you carrying bad habits or always getting sick? Do you have strong cravings? Then, you need a detox! The goal of the detox is to get rid of the toxins in your body so that your cells can function more effectively and efficiently.
These toxins have built up because of our environment, the foods we eat and the chemicals. (Even if you live in a very clean lifestyle, it's hard to avoid toxins getting in). After a detox, your body processes work better because they are unclogged.
Think of it like giving an oil change to your car-a detox is a great maintenance technique for your body. Plus, if you've felt stuck in an area of your life, this can be just the thing to dissolve that challenge.
Detox can also eliminate many emotional/physical blocks, and spiritual too. Afterwards, you'll have more energy and feel lighter.
The TRX
I wholeheartedly still consider the TRX one of my top fitness finds over the past few years. If you are looking for a highly effective, inexpensive, and simple tool to work out on at home or at the gym, check out the TRX. I use it with all of my clients and it is awesome. It involves "Suspension Training" and therefore is not only great for building muscle strength, but also positively affects the core and stabilizing muscles of the body. I often will do a quick 20 minute routine when short on time just on the TRX or I'll infuse it as part of my overall workout. They did a great job with the educational support material and their product has withstood the test of time. I highly recommend it as one of my top pieces of "equipment" used.

CLIENT INTERVIEW
Janet Dray interviewed by Cara Regas, FQ10 trainer
Cara (C) Share one interesting accomplishment you have experienced in the last year.
Janet (J) Since April, 2007 I've lost 95 lbs! After completing a 6-month class at Kaiser, I had gastric bypass surgery on April 9, 2007. Don't let anyone tell you it's the "easy" way. Losing weight and keeping it off requires hard work and major lifestyle changes no matter which method you use.
C. How has exercising helped your life?
J. It goes without saying that I never would have lost all this weight nor would I be as strong now if I hadn't started working out with you just one month after the surgery. We started very slowly, with just ½ hour sessions. You have helped me by pushing me at FQ10, which also helps me know my limits when working out by myself. A completely integral and necessary part of my fitness regimen is getting a massage from Linn Holland every week. I have fibromyalgia, and the combination of massage therapy with fitness and strength conditioning has worked to improve my stiffness, pain, and overall feeling of well-being. One of my goals has been to get strong enough to mount a horse by myself without a mounting block. I can do this now for the first time since I was about 20 years old!
C. What do you like best about your FQ10 experience?
J. Sometimes, when you're really overweight, or you can't bench press 100 lbs., you don't feel comfortable working out at gyms. Not at FQ10! Everyone here is so supportive! They know my name and something about my journey.
C. Anything else interesting you would like to share.
J. I'm a mom, a lawyer, and a classically trained spinto soprano.
