My New DREAM Home Office!

My New DREAM Home Office!
By Todd Durkin, MA, CSCS

I hate moving. It’s not fun. It takes a lot of work and it involves change.

And I just completed “moving” last week. That’s right…I completed a big move.

I’ve been moving my home office for the past 4 months. Let me explain.

For the past 13 years, I’ve had my home-office set up in a spare bedroom upstairs. And I was extremely productive in that office.

  • I’ve written many, many emails in there.
  • I wrote the majority of my IMPACT Body Plan book in there.
  • I completed many projects in that office.
  • I have spent much “blue-sky” time in there strategizing my business.
  • I did my prayer/quiet time in there in the early mornings.
  • I journaled in there.

In short, in many ways, it was my sanctuary.

But it was time for a move.

My wife Melanie approached me this past winter and made the suggestion of a move of my office “downstairs.”
She said that it was time for our 12-year old son to have his own room, instead of sharing it with his younger brother.

And she said we no longer need a designated kids playroom downstairs. The kids are 12, 10, and 7 now and they were not spending any more time in there.

And she reminded me of my own axiom that sometimes “change is good.”

She even tried to coax me by saying, “You can create your dream office from the ground-up!

But I couldn’t get over the thought of moving my office. That was my man-cave. That was where I spent 2-3 hours during the weekday (early morning or late night) and triple that on weekends (OK, so I write a lot).

I just couldn’t accept it at first.

But sooner or later, you just gotta give in to your wife and accept “it’s what’s best for the family.”

And I gotta tell you. I LOVE my new office. And yes, I created what truly is my dream home-office.

I have been in here for only a few weeks now. And it’s been so good for me.
Renewed energy.
BIG thinking.
Tons of writing.
Great lighting.
Lots of greenery.
… and a happy family.

Sometimes you want change. Sometimes you don’t. In this case, I did NOT. But man, I am so glad my wife convinced (OK, bribed) me that “it was best for the family.

She was right. It is best for the family AND it’s going to help me way more than I thought business-wise.

Sometimes you got to TRUST the people you TRUST the most. Even if you don’t initially agree with them.

Change, although often difficult to embrace initially, is often good. In this case, it was a change of environment.

What can you do to “change-up” your environment at home, gym, or workplace this month?
Go through your closets and give away a ton of the clothes you have not worn in a year?
Paint your bedroom or home-office?
Put some more plants and greenery in your home or gym?
Build your dream home-office?

My friends, it truly is amazing how much your ENVIRONMENT impacts you. Make sure you design, live, and operate in an environment that is conducive to your best work. Sometimes even small changes can make a big difference.

In this case, I’m confident “BIG” changes will manifest even more impactful work.

Much love…and much CHANGE (even when you don’t want it!). Time to go write some more in my new space!!!
